Another week rolls on and the end of lockdown is in sight… thankfully, and for now… Certainly not an easy time and it can feel that things are getting on top of you. I don’t know about you, but after 3 weeks or so or seeing the same faces, ever day, day in, day out, is starting to grind on me if I am honest… don’t get me wrong, I love my family, but I also love my own time and a change of scenery! Only so many times I can walk laps of where we live without it getting monotonous.

Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins

However, this existential funk I was suffering from was quickly slapped into perspective when I read the quite brilliant book – Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins – this guys life… just wow! If you ever feel you are having a rough time, or are in a hard spot, have a read of this (or look him up on his YouTube video’s) and you’ll quickly gain some perspective!

Cautionary note that it is VERY sweary, but look past that and focus on the lessons he teaches. In a nutshell, to say he had a tough childhood is one of the biggest under statements you can ever make, HOWEVER, he never let that define him or as he says ‘become a statistic’. As if he had ended up a junkie, in prison or worse you would 100% understand. Instead, he turned that into his motivation to become one of the fittest men in the world (running multiple Ultra Marathons and setting a world record for pull ups, among other things!) after having a very successful career in the most elite units of the US military.

He really is a rare thing in this modern world, a man who refuses to make excuses for himself and is driven to be the best version of himself he can be. A lot can be learnt from his mindset, so if you are feeling a bit over Covid right now, this will be worthwhile read (and also comes as a great audio book).

Keep safe and happy reading.

An extract from the Goodreads website:

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare — poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world’s top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America.”

In Can’t Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
